Hello there! I hope you’re having a great day so far.
Today, I’d like to talk about a new feature in Midjourney – the Style Tuner and how to use!
What is Style Tuner?
The Midjourney Style Tuner is a new tool that has recently received a significant update, offering an interesting way to fine-tune and customize the visual style of creative projects. Through this new feature of Midjourney, users can generate sample images according to provided prompts, enabling them to customize the visual style of their projects. Users can select images they like and create a unique style code for later use.
What distinguishes the Midjourney Style Tuner is its unparalleled customization. By adding the “-s” parameter to the prompt, you can fully control the level of style applied to your project. This means you can fine-tune the visual aesthetics to align with your creative vision.
Furthermore, using the Style Tuner allows for the seamless blending of multiple styles. By separating different style codes with a hyphen, you can create a unique style fusion that makes your work stand out.
The core concept of the Midjourney Style Tuner is to provide a user-friendly AI-based platform for generating and selecting visual styles based on given creative prompts. It is designed to meet the needs of a variety of creative professionals, from artists and designers to photographers and content creators.
1. How to Use Style Tuner?
The starting point for using the Midjourney Style Tuner is quite straightforward. As mentioned in a previous post, Midjourney operates within Discord, allowing you to generate images in a chat-based interface. When you type “Tune” in the chat window, a button labeled “Tune/Prompt” will automatically appear above.
After clicking this button, you can write a simple prompt. For instance, a pelican from a Ghibli movie made an impression on me, so I created a prompt based on a chubby pelican. You would simply enter your descriptive prompt into the chat.
My Prompt : Illust of fat pelican character
After typing your prompt, a window appears asking “Create style Tuner?” along with tabs for various settings. For the ‘Style Direction,’ there are four options: 16, 32, 64, and 128. If it’s your first time, setting it to 16Style might be a good start as it would offer a more basic level of styling which could be easier to manage and observe the nuances of.
Similarly, for the ‘Mode,’ you have two choices: Default and Raw. The Default mode is typically the recommended starting point as it provides a balance between the raw generative capabilities of the AI and some level of refinement predetermined by the Midjourney defaults.
Once you’ve made your selections, you would press the Submit button located at the bottom.
When you press the Submit button, a message pops up asking “Are you sure?” alongside a button that indicates “Cost: 0.15 fast hrs GPU credits.”
Style Tuner generates a pair of images for each Style Direction. A Style Tuner with 16 directions will generate 32 images. A Style Tuner with 128 directions will generate 256 images. Generating these images uses your subscription’s Fast GPU time.
After the Style Tuner is finished, a window will appear showing a URL. Shall we go to this URL?
2. Style Tuner Page
Did you enter the URL that appeared in the chat? You will be greeted with an incredible screen. The title “Midjourney Style Tuner (V1)” will be displayed, along with the prompt that I wrote below it. Right under that, in the category that reads “There are two ways to fine-tune the aesthetic:”, you’ll see buttons labeled “Compare two styles at a time” and “Pick your favorites from a grid.”
Helpfully, the Directions below inform us of the actions we should take on this page.
Since we trained with 16Style, ultimately, this page shows the image of the chubby pelican in 32 boxes, each with 4 outputs, totaling 128 images. If we recall the basic usage of Midjourney that we covered in the previous post, this really seems… quite remarkable.
First, I’ll activate the Compare tab and take a look to choose among the images below.
What’s truly amazing is that seeing a variety of styles created from a single prompt lined up like this gives me chills again. While the AI Art Generators we’ve explained so far only selectively show one style, requiring quite a bit of time investment, this time Midjourney’s Style Tuner seems to show overwhelming efficiency.
Here’s a tip: you don’t need to select all 16 comparison columns obtained through the 32Styles.
You only need to choose the output of the style you want the most. When you make a selection, a white outline will appear around your choice, as shown in the picture above. If none of the comparison images suit your taste, you can select the empty space in the middle.
Finally, if you look at the bottom of the window you are viewing, you can see that a code has been generated in the format of the prompt we wrote followed by –style @@@@@. You can simply press the copy icon on the right to copy it.
Now that all selections are made, shall we move on to the next step?
Don’t close the !!Style Tuner window, and open Midjourney’s Discord window again!
3. Imagine prompt and Code
Now, if you enter the Midjourney window and write the word /imagine in the chat, a prompt button like the Tune will be activated above. After pressing that button, paste the code you just copied into the chat and press enter, and you will see the basic functionality of Midjourney, which processes the style again based on the selected style.
This is a depiction of a pelican that has been recreated based on the styles I selected. Isn’t it adorable? It’s almost like looking at myself… haha.
If you want a clearer style, go back into the Style Tuner window, choose only one style that really appeals to you, select the empty space (no selection) for all the others, and then copy the code that is written at the bottom again. You can then create an image in Midjourney in the same way by pasting this code into the chat.
I will also try to regenerate by choosing just one style I want and copying the code.
Ta-da~ I tried to regenerate it as a slightly comical character. It’s so much fun. Now, let me tell you something really important: if we keep the code that we are attaching at the end and change the content of the prompt, a different image will be generated with that style applied.
As an example, let’s take one of the prompts we wrote above, change the pelican to a tiger, and keep the Style code as it is.
Do you see the adorable tiger? You can see that the style code is also reflected in the image.
Today, we looked at a new feature of Midjourney through simple character creation. How did you find it?
Isn’t it evident that all AI platform services are evolving day by day? Especially in terms of the diversity of styles introduced today and the standardization through coding, I think it is the most innovative of all the platforms released so far. Now, instead of laboriously prompting styles, try finding the style you want in Style Tuner and approach it in a new way!
Next time, I’ll bring you news on an even more interesting topic!
